Attorney General Roy Cooper visited The University of North Carolina at Pembroke on Wednesday and delivered advice to students on how to prevent building a mountain of debt that will saddle them for years while also protecting their credit. Among other suggestions, Cooper advised them to be careful with credit cards, be mindful of their credit ratings and be wary of scam artists trying to profit from their student loan debt. He was joined by experts from the North Carolina Department of Justice’s Consumer Protection Division and Victims and Citizens Services in what is being billed as The College Cash and Credit Tour.
“It’s an increasing problem we’re seeing out there,” Cooper told about 50 people at the University Annex Center. “That’s why we’re here to offer advice.”
About 60 percent of college students in North Carolina graduate with an average debt of $24,000 and, according to a Student Committee report on the university website, the percentage is higher at UNCP, 78 percent.
