North Carolina saw the country’s largest month-to-month fall in unemployment rates during November, through Robeson County’s rate is expected to remain among the state’s highest when the countywide numbers are released Tuesday.
At 8 percent, the countywide unemployment rate for October was the eighth highest in the state. According to a statement from the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Robeson County’s labor force comprised 53,585 people, 4,182 of whom were without jobs.
The countywide unemployment rate was significantly higher than the state average, which dropped by half a percentage point to 5.8 percent last month — matching the national unemployment rate.
But there may be some relief on the horizon. Greg Cummings, the county’s director of Economic Development, says he expects the unemployment rate to drop during 2015.
